Topics & Speakers:

8:30 am – 11:30 am: "Calculation of Building Area and Height Limits Under the 2009 IBC’" by Jeff Shapiro and Marshall Klein:

Topic: This seminar will present the history, application, and proposed changes to the Allowable Area and Height requirements of the IBC. How to implement and utilize these requirements can be very confusing, and this seminar is intended to provide the participant with a basis for understanding the development of the requirements, as well as real life application.

Speakers:

Jeff Shapiro, P.E., FSFPE, is nationally recognized as an expert and lecturer in fire and building safety specializing in the development and application of building and fire codes. Experience includes serving as chief executive and chief engineer of an international model code organization, senior fire protection engineer for embassy construction under contract with the U.S. Department of State, and fire protection engineer for a major metropolitan fire department.

Marshall Klein, P.E., is a nationally recognized expert in fire and building safety with more than 25 years in private practice as a consultant in fire protection engineering and an additional 10 years working in state and local code enforcement.

12:30 pm – 4:30 pm: ‘Sprinkler Incentives in the IBC’ by Jeff Hugo:

Topic: As part of attending this seminar, each RSVP’d participant will receive a FREE copy of “The Fire Sprinkler Guide” by NFSA, ($200 value – see below). The seminar will teach participants how to quickly and correctly identify the design options provided in the IBC. Seminar will include actual cost studies between sprinklered and non-sprinklered buildings; interactive workshops including actual design study; and also covered are relevant sections of the necessary NFPA Fire Sprinkler Installation standards.

From the 2009 NFSA Catalog:

“The Fire Sprinkler Guide (with 2006 IBC Section) - Code #P-022 Produced by NFSA, these handbooks are available in a three-ring binder. The guide defines those sections of the three model building codes, the Life Safety Code® (NFPA 101®) and International Building Code where fire sprinkler systems are required, including partial requirements and construction incentives. The Guide includes comparison tables to clarify many of the code requirements. The Guide is a valuable tool for architects and engineers, plan reviewers, fire and building inspectors, as well as sprinkler contractors, and serves well as a workbook for students at the NFSA’s Design Advantage Seminar. NFSA Member Price: $100 Nonmember Price: $200”

Speaker:

Jeff Hugo, CBO, is the Manager of Codes for the National Fire Sprinkler Association (NFSA). He represents the fire sprinkler industry (contractors, manufacturers, suppliers, designers and authorities having jurisdiction) in the development of the International Code Council family of codes. Jeff represents NFSA on several NFPA technical committees. He also assists the NFSA Engineering Department in research, informal interpretations of codes and standards, training, and regularly contributes building code related articles to the Code Corner department in SQ magazine, NFSA’s flagship publication. Jeff has been a Michigan registered Building Official, Building Inspector, and Plan Reviewer since 1995. Prior to joining the NFSA Engineering Department, Jeff was the Assistant Director of Building Codes for Tuscola County, Michigan, Chief Building Official/Administrator for the City of Bay City, and also the Chief Building Official for the City of Frankenmuth. Jeff also holds a multitude of certifications by the ICC.
