ICC and IRC Final Action Hearings

If you are interested in attending the hearings to support home fire sprinklers, please visit http://www.ircfiresprinkler.org and sign up for financial assistance immediately. ONLY 17 PEOPLE IN TEXAS HAVE SIGNED UP FOR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE SO FAR. That kind of turnout is not going to achieve our goal of getting home fire sprinklers into the Residential Code! In addition to the financial assistance being provided by the IRC Fire Sprinkler Coalition, FPANT is providing $200 travel expense checks on a first come, first served basis to the first 11 FPANT members who receive financial assistance confirmation from the coalition to cover all other travel costs. Also, don’t forget to visit www.iccsafe.org to register for the hearings. Minneapolis will be the best chance that we have ever had to get home fire sprinklers mandated in the Residential Code! Please do your part to help by signing up, attending, and voting!

The Regional Codes Coordinating Committee voted on July 10, 2008, to recommend the 2008 National Electrical Code for adoption with amendments to the NCTCOG Executive Board. The proposed recommended adoption date is currently September 1, 2008.

The 2008 NEC provides additional life safety requirements in the form of increased AFCI protection beyond just the bedrooms, additional GFCI protection in the garage, and child-resistant electrical outlets throughout the home. Note that this will increase the cost of the home, but exact figures have not yet been determined. Amounts between $500 and $1,500 have been quoted for a typical home. This amount will vary dependent upon the size of the home and the builder markup.

Once the Executive Board votes on this matter, the resultant recommendation will be posted on NCTCOG’s website.
